Oyster Roasts and Festivals on Virginia's Eastern Shore

Fall on Virginia's Eastern Shore means cool weather, beautiful leaves and oyster roasts. Historically fall was the beginning of oyster season and autumn is still celebrated with festivals and events that celebrate this shellfish. 

Here are a few local events to check out to learn about this local tradition: 

October 12, Exmore Rotary Soule Arnold Oyster Roast and Clam Steam

If you want a look into a traditional oyster roast this feast held in a town park is a good bet. Fill up on roasted oysters,steamed clams, clam chowder and barbecue with all the fixings.

October 12, Chincoteague Oyster Festival

Enjoy oysters served almost every way imaginable at this fall festival. Get your fill of fried oysters, oysters on the half shell, oyster fritters and steamed oysters. Plus, hush puppies, french fries, desserts and more.

November 2, Saxis Island Oyster Roast

This one is a little off the beaten path, but it's worth the trip. It doesn't get more authentic than the Saxis Island Oyster Roast. This popular event is held in the Shore Seafood Oyster House and features a menu of steamed oysters, oysters on the half shell, clam chowder and pulled pork with all the fixings.

November 9, Terrior & Merrior Oyster Extravaganza

Terrior is the idea that wine takes on the flavors of the soil the grapes were grown in and merrior is the idea that oysters do the same with water. This event celebrates both. 

Sample local oysters alongside locally made wine at a beautiful vineyard. You can also enjoy roasted oysters, steamed clams, clam chowder and a barbecue dinner.
